There are 3 main causes of scalp conditions that cause most of the scalp conditions. Understanding these causes is crucial to eliminating your scalp condition long term. Causes can include:
- A yeast infection like ringworm
- A reaction to hair product ingredients used in 90% of shampoos (this is one of the least understood but most common problems)
- An internal imbalance (least common cause of scalp conditions) that you can correct with small temporary dietary changes
Scalp conditions are usually quite easy to deal with once you learn what the cause was and by knowing which product ingredients to avoid.
You can also obtain relief in minutes with natural remedies you can use at home to treat your hair and scalp while maintaining beautiful hair & healthy scalp.
So what are some of the most prevalent scalp conditions?
Burning Red Itchy Scalp can be characterized as a tingling, burning, itching prickly, sensitive to the touch or fiery hot sensation. Often associated with an allergy, sunburn, chemical burn, sensitization of the scalp to ingredients in shampoos or conditioners, such as sodium laureth sulphates (foaming agents), parabens, ethoxylates, propylene glycol, petrochemical cleansers, phthalates, mineral oils, DEA, with synthetic colorants and fragrances ranking as highly irritating and sensitizing to your scalp and skin.
Sensitizers: sensitivity is the result of a response by our immune system from being exposed to a substance or foreign body that it wants to keep out of the body. A sensitivity normally develops over several years (or months in children). The reason sensitizing chemicals often slip under the radar is because the first use of a sensitizer (e.g. from a synthetic colorant in hair dye) may not trigger a reaction, but subsequent or repeated use can cause a person to develop an allergic reaction to even very low levels of the original or related substance. A reaction can hit you seemingly suddenly, when really it is the result of a build-up of your immune system’s response over a period of time.
Irritants: Irritants on the other hand are quite different to sensitizers and allergens which involve the immune system. An irritant is a non-allergic inflammatory reaction at the site of where the substance was applied (yes sensitizers can cause rashes elsewhere on the body). The difference is that dermatitis (a non fungal dandruff) is commonly the result of irritation directly from a product, whereas allergens and sensitizers (especially the highly sensitizing products used in hair dyes and colorants and henna tattoos) will effect your immune system in a way that is difficult to get at because once you develop a sensitivity, it’s with you forever! Common hair dyes contain some of the most carcinogenic and sensitizing ingredients of all. If you have ever had a fake tattoo that is henna based, then beware – there have been many cases of severe allergic reactions to the compound PPD (phenylenediamine) requiring hospitalization in people who have applied a hair dye (black or dark brown in particular) after having had a henna tattoo. There are also many more cases of reactions that have occurred from a sensitivity to compounds in hair dyes such as phenylenediamine. Dandruff (or seborrheic dermatitis) & Dry scalp (Seborrheic dermatitis) is an inflammatory disorder affecting areas of the head and body where sebaceous glands are most prominent. It can vary from mild dandruff to dense flakey and oily greasy scalp scale. Once again it is often an accumulation of toxins and products built up on our scalps that our body is trying to rid itself of.
Many hair scalp treatments promise relief from dry scalp conditions but really only offer a temporary fix (if you are lucky). This is because these products aren’t focused on the cause – just the symptoms. Once you are educated about the potential effects that a lot of common ingredients in shampoos are proven to have on skin you would understand why your scalp gets out of balance which encourages dandruff and other scalp conditions to develop.
Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)? What’s that? Why do you have to call a Poison Control Center if you accidentally swallow shampoo? And what are those warning labels on the back all about? What does it do to your head if it’s that toxic?
What you must know is that several chemicals, especially SLS, strip the natural oils from the skin and even corrode it, along with your eye membranes. Have you also noticed that your hair has been thinning? Well hair follicle damage is another little known but very common symptom of exposure to these chemicals.
Actually, most commercial shampoos & hair scalp treatments are designed to meet people’s sensory expectations. They offer instant gratification and the illusion that they are doing their job. Again therein lays the problem. For example adding silicone to conditioner induces an artificial shine but in truth can create problems long term including sensitivities. Thankfully it’s not all doom and gloom though because remember you can use of the natural home remedy solutions to treat scalp conditions. These highly effective natural shampoo alternatives that are low cost with no side effects.
Dry Scalp can feel tight , a sensation that is sometimes accompanied by flakiness. It is often the result of natural oils being stripped from our scalps by the frequent use of shampoos, hair dyes and or other hair products resulting in a disturbance to the natural balance of our sebum and ph (acid mantle).
Dermatitis & Eczema of the scalp There are many natural home remedies you can use to treat scalp conditions. These include highly effective natural shampoo alternatives that are low cost with no side effects…..and the remedies are easy to make and use for Scalp Scales Crust Flakes and itching.
Ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis) is a superficial fungal infection of the scalp. Scalp ringworm is caused by a mold-like fungi called dermatophytes. Ringworm infection occurs when a particular type of fungus grows and multiplies anywhere on your skin, scalp, or nails. It is far more common in children and symptoms include red, itchy patches on the scalp, leaving bald areas. The skin might itch and be red and peel or be scaly, have swollen blisters or a rash (that can spread) and can look like black spots. The rash is highly contagious. It is normally treated with over the counter products containing miconazole, clotrimazole, or similar. Sometimes Prescription antifungal skin medications, such as ones containing ketoconazole are needed to clear it up. There are many remedies direct from nature’s factories that can aid the healing process and act as natural anti-biotics, although it must be said that ringworm is an aggressive fungus which needs to be monitored closely and treated accordingly.

Scalp Psoriasis commonly occurs on the back of the head however multiple areas of the scalp or the whole scalp may be affected. Scalp psoriasis is characterized by thick silvery white scales on patches of very red skin and can extend slightly beyond the hairline. Scalp psoriasis, despite being partially hidden by the hair is often a source of social embarrassment due to flaking of the scalp and severe ‘dandruff’. Scalp psoriasis may be extremely itchy or on occasion have no itch symptoms. It can also cause temporary baldness on the affected areas. It is a common, chronic, inflammatory skin disease and can be associated with increased risk of melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma. Scalp psoriasis is treatable but as with all scalp problems, you need to know the cause so you can prevent the scalp condition from returning and treat it accordingly. Psoriasis of the scalp like all forms of this condition is not contagious; it cannot be passed from person to person nor can one spread it to other parts of the body. The disorder is a chronic or recurring condition which can vary in severity, from minor localized silvery patches on the scalp to complete body coverage.

always take caution when using hair dyes, some forms of hair dyes are cancer causing`*,
How are you supposed to get the oil treatment out of your hair without stripping it with a harsh shampoo? I’ve tried this kind of treatment but seems to be a vicious circle and I end up needing to use a sulfate shampoo to remove the oil. Removing the oil so you can be seen out in public seems to make the condition worse. My hair does not like oils. Help!!!!!!!!!!!
HI you can use essential oils without using a base by adding them to your shampoos. Also try using a non sulphate shampoo.
